Coach Ruth McGaughey

Coach Ruth has led the Oaks at Sonterra Swim Team for 12 years.  She began competitive swimming in Hawaii while only eight years old.  Later, while growing up in California, she swam 4 hours a day under Coach Sherm Chavoor who also coached Olympians Mark Spitz and Jeff Float.  At age 13, she began playing water polo against women's college teams.  In high school, Coach Ruth competed on the boy's water polo team and the school's swim team.  With no time for competitive swimming in college, she graduated from California State University in Sacramento and earned a B.S. in Management Information Systems.  Today, she enjoys giving swim instruction to children and adults.  She believes learning to swim is important for safety and to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.  She hopes all her swimmers love to swim as much as she does.  Keep on Swimming!
